Known for its natural and rugged beauty, Monhegan Island, located 12 miles off the coast of Maine and accessible only by boat has inspired and welcomed many artists. (i.e. Hopper, Rockwell Kent, Don Stone) For 15 yrs I have returned each summer to paint (en plein air) this amazing landscape. Not only is the light quality incredible, but the atmospheric conditions, diverse terrain and subject matters inspires a painting at every turn.
This year I will be offering a 4 day workshop from Thursday 6/28/18 – 7/1/18 on Monhegan Island. This workshop will be geared towards the beginner plein air oil painter and the class size will be small (6-8 max). If you have ALWAYS wanted to paint outdoors or on Monhegan but just didn’t know how to start, then this is the workshop for you. It is a progressive workshop with daily demos and each day building on previous days’ content. We will begin with the basics like equipment/supplies and set-up, then progress to composition, design and massing-in. Other topics such as light, value, temperature and color-mixing will also be covered. There will be lengthy individualized instruction and all along I will be sharing all of my pearls of wisdom and pitfalls of painting outdoors and on Monhegan.
The goal will be to learn how to paint outdoors and have a successful formula to execute a plein air sketch. The goal WILL NOT be to have a finished painting.
Beginners and intermediate oil painters are welcome and some oil painting/drawing experience is needed.
I will be staying at the Monhegan House (www.monheganhouse.com ) where we will be meeting daily after breakfast. A block of rooms has been reserved at MH at special rate. Sue and Holden Nelson will be our gracious hosts. They serve a wonderful breakfast which is included. Please book hotel rooms early as there are a limited number of singles available.
Cost: Workshop fee: 4 days/$300
